Osteopathy

Osteopathy is an established, recognised system of diagnosis and treatment that lays its main emphasis on the structural and functional integrity of the body.

Osteopathy recognises the need for medical investigation into symptoms when indicated and uses many of the diagnostic procedures used in conventional medical assessment and diagnosis.

Osteopaths use a combination of techniques to diagnose and treat “strained” parts of the body, particularly muscles, tendons, nerves, ligaments and joints. When all these parts are working normally the body is considered to be working in an efficient and balanced manner, reducing the risk of experiencing pain and wear and tear.

When one or more parts are working less efficiently (for example because of injury or disease), the body as a whole is required to compensate, placing additional stress on all the systems. Left untreated, even mild injuries can contribute to problems elsewhere in the body.

What can osteopathy help?

Whilst back pain is the most common problem seen, osteopathy can help with a wide variety of problems including:

The first consultation

The first consultation will take between 45 minutes and an hour. The osteopath will want to know what type of problem you are experiencing and a thorough history will be taken. This will include your general health, previous illnesses, your lifestyle and family medical history.

They will then want to conduct a physical examination and for this it is usual to undress down to your underwear. You will normally be taken through a range of movements and a detailed examination of joint function and individual tissues will be performed. More specific clinical tests may also be done. After the examination the osteopath will explain the findings and, if appropriate, a suitable course of treatment will be prescribed.

Treatment may take the form of a massage-type technique, mobilisation of parts of the body. The treatment plan will be agreed betweeen you and your osteopath.

Osteopaths work with their hands using a wide variety of treatment techniques. These may include soft tissue techniques, rhythmic passive joint mobilisation or the high velocity thrust techniques designed to improve mobility and the range of movement of a joint.

Gentle release techniques are widely used, particularly when treating children or elderly patients. This allows the body to return to efficient normal function.

You are welcome to bring a chaperone with you, if you so wish.
