The principle of Meridian Therapies is that emotional difficulties are associated with disturbances in the body-mind’s energy system and can be released by tapping on several points of the Meridian system.
The change can often be dramatic, leaving people more relaxed, even smiling; and with new insights into the situation that has been troubling them.
Meridian therapies are sometimes referred to as Energy psychology or Meridian-based Psychotherapy. These are umbrella terms for various techniques developed by different people such as Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Thought Field Therapy (TFT) and Be Set Free Fast (BSFF).
The principles behind EFT were discovered by Dr Roger Callahan, a clinical psychologist of more than 40 years experience, who had made it his life’s work to find a way to cure people of unfounded fears, phobias and anxieties.
Being a thorough and true explorer, he left no stone unturned, discovering some techniques by combining standard psychology, hypnotherapy and acupressure which revealed significant results with his patients.
He called his discovery Thought Field Therapy (TFT), on the grounds that thoughts related to the energy field in the body-mind, and that changing this energy field by tapping on meridian points could release negative or imbalanced emotions rapidly and easily.
Dr Callahan refined and researched his method, and today TFT and many of its descendants is the subject of serious scientific study and have already gained widespread acceptance.
Gary Craig, one of Dr Callahan’s students came up with the brilliant idea to tap all of the meridian points in a sequence; so whichever point or points were the correct ones, they would be covered by default.
He created a technique that everyone can learn to use very easily and quickly. This streamlined technique is known as Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT.
All energy-based meridian therapies rest on what Gary Craig calls "The Discovery Statement":
Conventionally in psychotherapy, there used to be the belief that a negative event or memory triggers a negative emotion. So every time, this memory was accessed as a result of a thought or an environmental reminder; the negative reminder was experienced - a simplistic, linear cause and effect relationship.
Dr Callahan discovered a step in between the memory/thought and the negative emotion, and this was a disruption in the smooth flow of energy through the meridians. Instead of the memory or thought causing the negative emotion, according to the Discovery statement, the process is more like:
So instead of trying to undo the thoughts or memories, which many have attempted in millions of hours of therapy with highly unpredictable results; the energy -based therapies directly intervene in the intermediate step.
When the disruption has been calmed and relieved, the person experiences no further pain or negative emotions from the original memory or thought.
Many therapists similar to myself all across the world, use this technique to treat thousands of patients successfully. Though the only way to fully appreciate the effectiveness of EFT is to experience it for yourself.
EFT addresses many of the health concerns that people take to their GP, it can be used by people of all ages to treat minor, short-term ailments and chronic conditions.
Whether these conditions manifest physically, emotionally or mentally, EFT can be used to choose how you want to manage or move on from health or life concerns. It often helps those conditions that conventional medicine can manage yet is unable to cure.
